The name "Ponchatoula" is derived from the Choctaw words meaning "flowing hair," which was the Native Americans' way of expressing the breathtaking beauty of the location, with Spanish Moss hanging from the sprawling oak trees. That beauty remains to this day, drawing people from all over the south to take up residence in Ponchatoula.
